The tributaries that please the City of God, and the love of everything counter, original, spare, strange

For my part it’s one of the loveliest phrases in the Bible: There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, from Psalm 46- I’ve meditated on it and it continues to reward. Those tributaries- all the things that feed the mainstream- all the things Gerald Manley Hopkins sings about in ‘pied beauty,’ the things counter, original, spare, and strange- are what makes life worth while and makes joy possible.
