A groundswell of compassion underneath quick turns of laugh-out loud-dark humour and dialogue, Under majordomo Minor is Patrick deWitt’s latest odd charmer. I heartily recommend it, especially to fans of Wes Anderson’s movies.

From a bombastic, risk taking businessman with a sensitive eye for beauty and a raw homesickness to a brawling English professor, Guy Vanderhaeghe creates characters in Daddy Lenin and Other Stories with seemingly deep contradictions that make them whole and intensely true. These contradictions open up different roads of possibilities, and Vanderhaeghe has you cruising and smiling down a straightaway until you’re forced to slam on the breaks–and turn.
